GLOBAL UPDATE is a four page newsletter published every two months by Initiatives of Change-International. Two pages consist of latest news, with the last two pages, 'People Building Trust', giving in greater depth the story of a changemaker. Issue 13 reports on a special 'Sorry Book' that is helping Kenyans move towards reconciliation, plus news of the first of two dialogues for Sierra Leone's leaders aimed at building trust, news from Italy, Switzerland, South Africa, France and India. People Building Trust reports on the care and healing Visier and Pari Sanyü are giving to refugees in Australia.

Issue 12 reports on Solomon Islands ex-militants making a commitment to work for peace, plus news from Kenya, the United Kingdom, the United States and Lebanon. In People Building Trust Frédéric and Nathalie Chavanne report on how residents in suburban Paris are learning to engage in dialogue to address the split developing between the West and the Muslim world.

In People Building Trust Peter Heyes recounts what some young Vietnamese and Cambodians are doing to make the history of conflict between their two countries stop with their generation.

No 10: March 2008

Issue 10 reports on how Sierra Leone’s President has pledged his support for a series of Moral Foundations for Democracy courses for members of parliament and senior civil servants. There is also news of the historic apology by Australia's prime minister to indigenous Australians, plus news from India, Canada and France. In People Building Trust Jean Brown reports on how from Sudan to Sydney, women are addressing the underlying issues of division and dysfunction in families and communities.

Issue 9 reports on a ‘new leadership model’ for the Asian economy. There is also news of Advent in a Shia prayer hall in Sydney, a Spiritual gathering for peace in Montreal, the annual Metropolitan Richmond Day, the Clean Elections Campaign in Kenya and an update on Hope-Sierra Leone. In 'People Building Trust' Mike Lowe talks with Rob Corcoran, National Director of Initiatives of Change, USA, about his work with Hope in the Cities, based in Richmond. Download

No 8: November 2007

Issue 8 reports on the campaign against election violence in Sierra Leone. There is also news of Peace Circle events in Africa, an award for Peace for Initiatives of Change (IofC) in Côte d’Ivoire, the State funeral of Kim Beazley in Australia, news from Colombia and information on how to order a report of the Caux 2007 conferences, plus a short DVD. 'People Building Trust' gives the background to a people’s ‘peace constituency’ that has grown in India, Pakistan and Kashmir, nudging governments to move. Issue 7 reports on the visit by Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the UN, to the IofC conference centre at Caux, Switzerland. There is also news of how 'Hope Sierra Leone' has helped in the critical elections in that country, plus news of the launching of Rajmohan Gandhi's biography of his grandfather the Mahatma. Brief news is given of a Life Matters course for young people in Australia and the 13th Asia Pacific Youth Conference. In 'People Building Trust' Mike Lowe talks to the leader of Norway's Islamic Movement and gives the background to how Muslim leaders in Norway have avoided potential clashes.

No 6: July 2007

Issue 6 reports on how 33 leading Burundians, including three former heads of state, held six days of ‘honest conversations’ as guests of Initiatives of Change at its conference centre in Caux, Switzerland. There is also news of how a unique collaboration to generate grassroot answers to corruption is developing between Africa and the Pacific. The challenge ‘How do we build trust in America so that we become a trustworthy nation that is constructive and hope giving to the rest of the world?’ was given at a national forum on ‘Building Trust in America’. There is brief news from Switzerland, Ghana, Sierra Leone and India. 'People Building Trust' features a community in rural Jamaica where a remarkable partnership has generated jobs, dignity and development. Download

No 5: May 2007

Issue 5 reports on how five thousand people celebrated the unveiling of a Reconciliation statue on March 30 at the site of Richmond’s former slave market. There is brief news from the US, Canada, Sierra Leone, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Taiwan. 'People Building Trust' features an 88 year-old Japanese lady, Miss Takako Sakaki, who has made 80 visits to China, at the same time as Japan's Prime Minister Abe wrestles with improving relations in East Asia. Issue 4 reports on the 'Australia as a Neighbour' conference in Melbourne and Mohamed Sahnoun's call for Caux to become a 'Davos for Peace'. There is brief news from Sierra Leone, India, China and elsewhere. 'People Building Trust' features two Lebanese women, a Christian and a Muslim, who are trying to get their respective communities to 'see each other in a different light'. Download
